What is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon?
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are the experts in mouth, jaw, and facial surgery. We are the only dental specialists who are trained in a hospital-based residency program that is 4-6 years in length after completion of dental school. Dr. Bikey completed his training at the University of Toronto and its affiliated hospitals. The training program also involves rotations alongside other medical residents – anesthesia, emergency medicine, general surgery, internal medicine, intensive care medicine, otolaryngology – head and neck surgery, plastic surgery, and trauma medicine.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons have extensive experience in the removal of impacted teeth (wisdom teeth, supernumerary teeth, etc), implant placement, bone grafting, soft tissue grafting, oral pathology, and surgical exposure of teeth for orthodontic treatment. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons also have a wide range of expert skills including the treatment and management of facial injuries, facial deformities, oral deformities, temporomandibular joint disease (TMJ or TMD), cysts, tumours, and infections.
